Keep your identity where it belongs-with you

Learn how to spot the signs of identity theft and familiarise yourself with steps you can take to ensure your identity remains protected.

What is identity theft?

Identity theft is when someone obtains essential information about you-such as your passport number, date of birth, mother's maiden name and your personal email passwords-and uses it to get more information about your account before attempting to perform unauthorised transactions on your accounts.

How to protect yourself

  • Make your user IDs and passwords for your bank accounts and registered mail accounts as secure as possible: Create passwords that only you would know.
  • Change your password: Remember to change your password every 30-60 days.
  • Don't send sensitive information via email: Never email your password, account number, credit card number or other sensitive information to anyone. To communicate with NBF electronically, use our secure online banking platform on NBF Direct.
  • Never leave your computer unattended: After completing your banking tasks, end your web sessions by logging off.
  • Be wary of how much personal information you post online: When visiting social networks, remember that sharing information such as your birth date, phone number, email address, location and photos can put your identity at risk.
  • Never write down PINs and passwords: memorise them instead.
  • Configure alerts: Ask NBF to set up SMS  alerts to notify you of any changes to your account in terms of added beneficiaries and transactions. Also configure similar alerts for your personal emails and social networking sites.
